Apple's smart socks, what are they?
The official name of the patent is "Haptic output devices", which is used to describe socks and special shoes with additional sensors for additional/mixed reality.
“Tactile output devices are a group of products that can include cavities, shoes, socks, with the main purpose of receiving the feet of users,” says a patent for a technology that makes clothes smart. "Also this group can include platforms for feet from a flat surface on which a person can stand freely."
As Apple commented on its development, the technology will apply to both insoles and socks and shoes in general. This does not exclude the possibility of using the technology concerning other elements of clothing. But the patent strongly focuses on the leg device. The patent also spelled out various details about the sensors used, materials, but not much was given to the description of the functionality.
The functionality of the new technology
It is assumed that the socks will be sold with a platform-mate, to make it easier to control the virtual reality headset.
As the description says, additional sensors will be built into the socks, the main task of which is to count all leg movements and transfer them into virtual reality (AR). Also, new technology from Apple will allow the user to transmit new sensations when touching the digital space - for example, vibration.
The technology can only be used when controlling a VR headset. In this way, the interaction with "Viard glasses", iPhone, PC, and other gadgets will improve.
At the moment, smart glasses are just a draft on paper. But, there is no guarantee that the project will be implemented into reality. At the moment, everything depends solely on the decision of the company's management and the skillful hands of the designers. We keep our fingers on the pulse and watch all the latest news from Apple.
