Apple did this, patented Touch ID, and perhaps in the fall, the novelty will have two authentication methods: recognition of the owner's face and using a fingerprint. In other words, Face ID and Touch ID will be used at once.
Unlocking keys using a fingerprint is especially popular today. But authentication using the owner's face is not particularly relevant today. Especially during quarantine, it is quite difficult for a masked person to do this, since the system cannot read the necessary information.
Not so long ago it became known that Apple patented a new technology, but whether they will have time to improve it and offer it to customers in 2021 is still unknown. It will be quite interesting if, after the appearance of a new smartphone, wearing masks will not be mandatory.
At the spring presentation from Samsung, gadgets were presented that support two types of unlocking at once - face recognition and fingerprint. But the very next day after that, namely on March 18, it became known about the new registered patent by the "apple" company, information about the application, which was created at Apple, was published.
The difference between an optical scanner and an ultrasonic one
The correct operation of the scanner directly depends on the fingerprint entering the sensor. When used during the reading of a print, the reflection, which is created by a stream of light created at a certain angle, the clarity and contrast of the image will increase dramatically. In order to achieve this effect, several layers are placed over the fingerprint sensor. A non-axial stream of light, which will be directed at an angle, will help achieve the desired fineness, which is necessary for reliable scanner operation. The effectiveness of this method has been confirmed in numerous tests.
Considering that engineers began serious work on image clarity and contrast, it became known that there were problems with contrast and clarity.
For example, Qualcomm uses a completely different type for an on-screen fingerprint sensor, namely ultrasonic. It has no problems with contrast and clarity.
It is known that Apple has been solving these problems since 2013. In 2018, they came to the conclusion that it would be impossible to make the system completely perfect, so it is better to use a completely new method - optical. But, on the way to implementing this method, a large number of difficulties had to be overcome.
