At the presentation of Apple in 2019, where the main event of course was the release of a new line of iPhones, other interesting innovations were announced. It was then that the company first launched its own gaming service Apple Arcade, and in the early stages there was little information about it, but after a while we can fully consider all the features of this service, its relevance in modern realities and options for further development.
Apple arcade what is it?
Arcade is a gaming service that can be accessed from any Apple platform, a monthly subscription of Apple Arcade, the price in Ukraine of which is $ 4.99 opens access to the entire catalog of gaming projects of the service. As with other modern services, the first month of use is available free of charge. And those users who bought one of the devices, which was announced at the same September presentation, received free access to Arcade for a year.
In the App Store for each platform, Arcade is presented as a separate category, it can be accessed by any user of the device running on iOS 13 and above. After opening this category, you will immediately be asked to issue a trial subscription, after going through the standard registration procedure, a similar interface will appear on the screen to any section of the store, but with some features. First of all, the lack of prices is striking, as well as the standard for many applications from Apple stores inscription "Built-in shopping". The fact is that the user has already paid the developers when making a paid subscription, so the games are completely free of advertising and the already mentioned built-in purchases.
It is worth paying tribute to Apple, because in this way the company eliminates any options for additional earnings on its users. After all, when installing a game from the classic App Store, you can never say for sure whether you will need further investment for a comfortable game, and what it will be.
After clicking the "Download" button, the standard procedure takes place, the game is downloaded to the device and appears in the list of installed applications. But the feature of Arcade is that the game can be downloaded to other platforms, while maintaining progress by synchronizing through Game Center. Simply put, by playing a game on your iPhone on the go, the user can continue to play from the same place at home, such as a MacBook.
Games for Arcade
Given the already mentioned features, it becomes clear that the game projects on the Arcade must be clear and quite strict requirements. It is simply impossible to move the game from the classic Store to Arcade, because before that the game must be adapted to multiplatform, as well as provide a comfortable gameplay given the lack of in-game purchases. This is the main catch, because most game projects are designed to the opposite, ie the gameplay is configured so that the player has to make separate purchases within the game due to its excessive complexity, for the sake of further passage. In addition, you need to maintain the high quality of the games presented in Arcade, because it will depend on its success and popularity in the audience.
In more understandable language, Arcade, unlike the App Store, cannot and should not include a game that has not been specifically adapted to this category and meets the requirements only formally. In fact, this way the user will be able to save a lot of time searching for the game, because it is quite common when after downloading any game from a regular Apple store and trying to play it, it becomes clear that this project is not worth the time spent on it. .
But there is a downside, in the case of Arcade, it is a rather modest choice of games, especially given the scale of the classic App Store. But even so, finding something interesting is really much easier, including thanks to some exclusives, especially for fans of all kinds of arcades and quests. The list of game projects that are worth noting includes the following:
- Shinsekai: Into the Depths;
- Hot Lava;
- Bleak Sword;
- Jenny LeClue - Detective;
- Dodo Peak;
- Sayonara Wild Hearts.
Of course, these projects do not end good games in Arcade, and given the individual tastes of each gamer, you may like games in completely different genres.
Analog of Apple arcade
Xbox Cloud Gaming, a cloud gaming service that allows users of Apple devices to play Xbox games through a browser, has been available on iOS and MacOS platforms since April 20 this year. This service from Microsoft on these platforms will now work in beta, so you need an invitation to participate.
Clock iOS beta will be available on a monthly subscription basis, and in beta testing, players will be able to evaluate more than a hundred different gaming projects, including Xbox console exclusives. The peculiarity of the streaming game service is that now you do not have to have a console at home, and you can play any game from the catalog directly on your iPhone or iPad. The cost of subscribing to xcloud on iOS, subject to some restrictions provided by the beta test phase, reaches $ 4.99 per month, but after the main release it will increase to $ 9.99.
All test takers can log in to Microsoft xCloud through the official Xbox site and play any game using Safari, Chrome or Edge browsers. For comfortable control, you can connect any compatible controller, but there is also support for touch control, which is especially important for portable gaming.
Unfortunately, xcloud in Ukraine will not be available today, due to the fact that the beta test is planned to be conducted only in 22 countries. Thus, Microsoft plans to study the feedback of players and, if possible, optimize the service for use on these platforms.
It is not entirely correct to make a comparison between xbox game pass vs Apple Arcade, because the games presented on one and the other service differ significantly in their scale and genres. But do you need Apple Arcade cumbersome gaming projects, or should you still focus on small and tube games, distancing yourself from console and PC gaming, thus occupying a separate niche. However, the arcade catalog presents not only time killers, but also more serious projects that make you plunge into the gameplay with your head. There is no doubt that this service will find its audience and positively affect the mobile gaming industry, forcing developers to create unique and interesting projects that, importantly, will be loyal to the player.
